About Moles

The common mole (Talpa europaea) is a small, burrowing mammal found throughout mainland Britain. Perfectly adapted for life underground, moles have:

• A cylindrical body covered in dense, velvety fur
• Powerful, spade-like forelimbs designed for rapid digging
• Virtually no functional eyesight — they navigate entirely by touch and smell
• A voracious appetite, consuming their own body weight in earthworms daily

Moles are solitary and highly territorial. What appears to be a large infestation is often the work of just one or two animals — but that is no comfort when your lawn or paddock is being systematically destroyed.

The Damage Moles Cause

Gardens and Lawns

Molehills are the most visible sign of activity — mounds of excavated soil pushed up from below as the mole extends its tunnel network. Beyond being unsightly, they can:

• Smother and kill grass
• Create uneven, hazardous ground
• Introduce weed seeds to the surface
• Undermine plant root systems

Agricultural Land

On farmland, mole activity poses a more serious economic threat:

• Soil pushed to the surface contaminates silage, introducing Listeria bacteria — a significant risk to livestock

Why DIY Treatment Rarely Works

Moles are highly intelligent and quickly learn to avoid disturbance. Home remedies — including proprietary repellents, vibrating stakes, and deterrent plants — have consistently poor results in independent testing. Flooding tunnels or deploying traps without experience is rarely effective and can be counterproductive, causing the mole to simply extend its tunnel network further.
